Press Release Summary = Heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart; it is
so called because of a burning sensation of the breastbone, although some heart
problems have a similar commotion to heartburn.
Press Release Body = Heartburn is also recognized as one of the causes of chronic
cough, and may even imitate asthma.
- Otherwise known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease afflicts millions of people.
Just below the breastbone caused by regulation of gastric acid. The pain often
rises in the chest and may spread out to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw.

The sensation of heartburn is caused by exposure of the lower esophagus to the
acidic contents of the stomach. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)
separating the stomach from the esophagus is supposed to contract to prevent this
situation. If the sphincter relaxes for any reason (as normally occurs during
swallowing), stomach contents, mixed with gastric acid, can return into the
esophagus. This return is also known as reflux, and may progress to gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD) if it occurs frequently.
It\'s normal to suffer from acid reflux (heartburn) every once and awhile. It\'s only
acid reflux disease when it\'s a chronic condition, happening frequently and for long
periods of time.
Certain foods are considered to encourage gastroesophageal reflux:
· Alcohol can have several unpleasant affects on heartburn sufferers.
· Coffee, tea, cola, and other caffeinated and carbonated beverages.
· Chocolate.
· Citrus fruits and juices.
· Tomatoes and tomato sauces (such as pizza and pasta sauce).
· Spicy foods and fatty foods (including full-fat dairy products) should be avoided
before bedtime.
· Peppermint and spearmint.
· Dry foods such as peanuts.
· Fatty foods such as ice cream.
· It can also be psychosomatic, primarily in relation to stress.
· Avoid Cruciferous vegetables: onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach,
brussel sprouts.
However, following this list of foods directly is not just right for some have a
more serious case of GERD than others. Thus, it is up to an individual to decide
which foods bother them and which ones don\'t. But sensible advice offered by many
sources is to keep away from food for a minimum of 2 hours before bedtime and, also,
not lying down after a meal.
